Funeral & Burial Benefits for Veterans

Veterans can receive burial and memorial benefits for themselves and their family members at Sunset Funeral Home, Cremation Center & Cemetery.

Sunset can assist you in obtaining the Veterans Burial Allowance. Benefits assist in the cost of paying for burial costs or for memorial services.  Family members can use these funds to order memorial items such as headstones for their Veterans as well. The Veterans Burial Allowance varies, and it is the amount provided to cover the costs of the Veteran’s funeral services, burial, and transportation.

The funds can also be used for:

  • Headstones

  • Grave markers

  • Presidential Memorial Certificates, and

  • Other types of memorial items

Keep In Mind:

  • You don’t have to pay for the headstone or marker itself, only for the cost of placing it (called a setting fee).

  • If you want a medallion for your veteran, Sunset can request one, which will then be attached to a privately purchased headstone, marker, or niche cover in a private cemetery. You can choose from three different sizes. Learn more about medallions and see what they look like below.

  • Call Sunset today at (812) 477-5316 to choose your headstone, marker, and other items for your veteran.

Medallions

Bronze-Medallions

The bronze medallion is available in three sizes: Small (2″W x 1-1/2″H x 1/3″D), Medium (3-3/4″W x 2-7/8″H x 1/4″D), or Large (6-3/8″W x 4-3/4″H x 1/2″D). Each medallion is inscribed with the word “VETERAN” across the top and the branch of service at the bottom.

Medal of Honor Medallions

The Medal of Honor (MOH) Medallion comes in two sizes: Medium or Large. Each medallion is inscribed with “MEDAL OF HONOR” at the top and the branch of service at the bottom.

Burial Flags to Honor Veterans & Reservists

Veteran Flag

You may be eligible for a burial flag if you’re the next of kin or a close friend of the Veteran or Reservist. Sunset will assist you in this process.

One of these must describe the service of the Veteran or Reservist. They:

  • Served in wartime, or

  • Died while serving on active duty after May 27, 1941, or

  • Served after January 31, 1955, or

  • Served in peacetime and left military service before June 27, 1950, after serving at least 1 enlistment, or because of a disability that was caused—or made worse—by their active military service, or

  • Served in the Selected Reserves (in certain cases), or served in the military forces of the Philippines while in service of the United States and died on or after April 25, 1951.

Presidential Memorial Certificate

A Presidential Memorial Certificate (PMC) is an engraved paper certificate signed by the current president. Sunset will help you determine your veteran’s eligibility and apply on your behalf.
