Michael Ray Hammerstein, 74, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on April 14, 2023. He was born on October 5, 1948, to Joseph and Mildred (Breidenbach) Hammerstein in Evansville, Indiana.

Michael graduated from North High School. He went on to serve his country in the United States Air Force for 8 years. Upon discharge from Military service, he became an entrepreneur alongside his brother working to remodel homes.  Michael was a family man. He was a loving husband of 39 years, a father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother. He had many hobbies he enjoyed including golfing, fishing, watching NASCAR, skiing, and spending time outdoors. Above all, making memories with his loved ones was the most important.

Michael is survived by his loving wife Barbara (Blankenship) Hammerstein; children Hollie (Rick) Sargent, Charlie (Devin) Gish, and Rodney Gish; grandchildren Eva, Chloe, Cassidy, Kaitlyn; great-grandson Lincoln; siblings Cathy Hammerstein and Paul Hammerstein; sister-in-law Monnie Hammerstein; nephew Ronnie Paulson; niece Lisa Shaffer; great-niece Valerie and great-nephews Joseph and Cameron; lifelong friends Steve and Pat Cato; and numerous loving extended family and friends.

Michael was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Mildred Hammerstein; brother Tom Hammerstein; and grandson Conner Sargent.

A Celebration of Life for Michael will be held from 1-3pm on Saturday, April 22, 2023, at Sunset Funeral Home and Memorial Park.
