Jann (Leggett) Hickey, 72, of Evansville, passed from her earthly body into her heavenly one on Tuesday, October 11 at 7:10 p.m.

Jann was a devoted wife, nurturing mother and nana, fun aunt, loving sister and faithful friend. In her 38+ years of teaching, she had many special students who became like family.

Jann was a lady of many musical and artistic talents. She loved spending time in her craft room and doing fun projects with her grandchildren. She was a great pianist and guitar player, and knew the words to most any song. She loved to read, play games, travel, going on golf cart adventures and spending the winter months with her husband, Ed, in their Florida home. Jann especially loved to swim; she was on swim teams growing up and in her late 50s, checked off a bucket list item by swimming across the Ohio River. Jann attended First Christian Church in Evansville. She cherished her weekly bible study group and enjoyed volunteering at church events.

Jann was born and raised in Evansville, where she attended Dexter Elementary School and Harrison High School. She went to Indiana State University in Terre Haute, earning her bachelor’s degree in elementary education, and Western Illinois University where she earned her master’s degree in reading education. Jann began teaching in an elementary school in Moline, Ill., and then came home to teach at the University of Evansville. She also taught at Evansville Day School and finished her career at the University of Southern Indiana, where she retired in 2010 as a Learning Specialist. She was named 2008 Administrator of the Year by the USI Student Government Association and, upon retiring, was granted the honored title of Emeritus.

She is survived by, Ed, her husband of 50 years; daughters, Jennifer Hickey (Kelly Williams), and Jill Howard (Chad Howard); grandchildren, Addison Howard and Kylee Howard, Lexi Howard, Reagan Howard, Alex Shepard and Max Shepard; stepmother, Frankie Leggett; sisters, Paula Leggett Chase, Maria Leggett and Cheryl Leggett; and many nieces, nephews and loving friends.

We can only imagine the homecoming and celebration as she was greeted by her mother, Dorothy Hawkins Leggett, father, Charles Leggett and brother, Chuck Leggett, all who preceded her in death.

A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Christian Church, 2845 Beaumont Dr, Evansville, Ind. 47725. Jerry Clark is the officiant. Visitation with family will be from 10 a.m. until the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Holly’s House, 750 North Park Dr 47710.
